How To Raise Your Voices!

Critical times to raise your voice:

1. NOW - You can begin raising your voice by sending letters now by email or standard mail. You can also fax, and call by phone.

2. August 24, 2008 - Send another wave of letters on or right before this final date.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING!

Who are we writing to?

  • International Olympic Comittee
  • The World Trade Organization
  • The United Nation’s High Commission on Human Rights
  • The Peoples Republic of China
  • President George W. Bush

2. How to formulate your own response (Or, HOW TO RAISE YOUR VOICE)

Some things to remember

  • Write a short clear message (one page maximum)
  • Be polite and respectful (a hostile attitude will give China a reason to dismiss your concern)
  • State your concern and make a simple request
  • Do NOT discuss politics, ideologies or governments

Here’s what we recommend

  • Date your letter
  • Open by identifying yourself by nationality and / or profession.
  • State your concern about the human rights disappointments in China

(if you choose to be specific go to www.persecutionandtheolympics.com for actionable information).

  • Make the recommendation to

1.     RATIFY the United Nation’s International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and

2.     RELEASE these five prisoners:

  •
    1.
      1. Zhang Rongliang,
      2. Xu Na,
      3. Hu Jia,
      4. Shi Tao,
      5. Guo Feixiong.

  • Ask for a response
  • Close by appealing to their reason and good faith.
  • Sign off (respectfully)

To: The United Nation’s High Commission on Human Rights

Dear Ms. Louise Arbour

My name is (your full name) and I am a citizen of (country) and my occupation is (state occupation e.g. student, home maker, doctor, professor, etc.).

I am concerned about the continuing deterioration of human rights in the Peoples Republic of China and would like for you, as you prepare to depart from your post this month as High Commissioner, to encourage the Chinese officials to ratify the United Nations Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and release the following five prisoners: Zhang Rongliang, Xu Na, Hu Jia, Shi Tao, and Guo Feixiong.

I realize that this is a major request but I only ask the OHCHR to live up to its explicit human rights mandate which states “to ensure that international human rights standards are implemented on the ground” for member countries.  I believe that you wield influence with Chinese officials and you are in a unique position to reason with them in good faith.

I would like this matter to be brought to the immediate attention to the incoming Commissioner Navanathem (Navi) Pillay, when she assumes the post in September.

If possible, I would like to be informed on any progress on this request.
